For the first time in Paris,
The Fragonard house unveils its heritage collections
in the halls of the Paris Mint.
Exhibition
Founded in 1926 in Grasse, the world capital of perfumery, the Fragonard house opens its doors to the public and shares ancestral know-how that has been kept secret in the workshops until now. In homage to its hometown and the French refinement of the 18th century, it takes the name of the painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard, a famous child from Grasse.
One hundred years later, the adventure remains a family affair. The granddaughters of the founder, Anne, Agnès and Françoise Costa, run the house and enrich the collections that have grown over the generations, now gathered in its seven museums in Grasse, Paris and Arles.
On the occasion of its centenary, the Fragonard house presents Fragonard, 100 years of collections and expertise, An exhibition that brings together for the first time the three sections of its 18th-century collections: art objects, fine arts and costumes. At the heart of the exhibition are precious bottles and utensils, rare costumes and masterpieces by Jean-Honoré Fragonard and other illustrious painters, which dialogue around themes dear to the 18th century.
Scenic route
The exhibition opens in the majestic 18th-century salon of the Hôtel de la Monnaie in Paris on a stage recreated in costumes depicting a drawing by Jean-Honoré Fragonard depicting him and his family sitting on a bench in what is probably a performance hall near the Palais-Royal. This first staging immerses the visitor in the daily life of the Grassois painter living in Paris. Numerous adjoining rooms then present the most beautiful pieces from the Fragonard collections: perfume bottles, urns, pots-pourris, paintings and costumes. The poetic symbols of the 18th century, such as birds, flowers and messages of love, as well as various olfactory devices accompany the visitor throughout this immersive experience.
