Ladies then wore bodices and dresses with distinctive sleeves, known as «leg-of-mutton sleeves».

It was also at this time that the Great Walk took place every year. It was held on the first Sunday after 15 August. Initially organised at the Alyscamps, it was later held on the Lices, a stone's throw from here, and drew a massive crowd.
For several months, young women from Arles would secretly prepare astonishing outfits in the hope of captivating the public. Fashion columnists and serialised novelists would come specially to describe the trends and the finest creations. This true style competition came to an end in the late 1830s, but it remains to this day one of the most striking fashion phenomena for the town: women were both creators and models there.

Throughout the 19th century, the Arlesian costume continued to evolve, influenced by trends from Paris, advances in the textile industry, and also the development of the railways and trade. World fairs, local trade fairs such as the Fair of Beaucaire, and the rise of department stores also shaped the tastes of the women of Arles and the way they dressed.

Look now at the head ribbons. Having appeared in the 1820s, they have never left the heads of the women of Arles, but their style has changed a great deal.
Initially made of fine silk, knotted and piped, in the 1840s they became rich coloured velvet ribbons, adorned with striking patterns. After 1850, glossy satin established itself as the background; it showcased velvet designs that evolved over time, eventually becoming monochrome. At the end of the century, these ribbons became shorter: the cap no longer covered the whole head, but only the comb essential to the famous hairstyle of the Arlesiennes.

At the same time, the shapes of the skirts and bodices closely follow Parisian innovations. Even the fichus, and the way they are arranged on the bust, reflect this desire to stay in tune with the times.

Yet on the eve of the First World War, traditional Arlesian costume began to disappear. Young women now dreamt of creations by Paul Poiret, Madeleine Vionnet or the Callot sisters. The final Arlesian costumes became simpler: some resembled tailored suits or walking dresses, others fluid satin gowns, sometimes adorned with beads and geometric trimmings.
Following the war, national mourning and the need for women to replace men in many tasks further accelerated this evolution. From then on, the Arlesian costume was worn only by the oldest generations, and solely on special occasions.

We hope you enjoyed this part of the tour.
Feel free to go back if you want to look at a detail again, or to supplement your discoveries using the labels and notices for the works.
We look forward to seeing you again soon, to revisit this exhibition or discover the next one which will reveal many other surprises.

["post-1511","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
