The first exhibition of the Museum of Fashion and Costume
After five years of work and restoration, the Museum of Fashion and Costume has finally opened its doors. An exceptional venue that invites the public to discover tailor-made exhibition spaces at the heart of the building, including a large gallery on the first floor.
For its first exhibition, Collections - Collection, the museum brings together two collections located at opposite ends of Provence. This fusion confers exceptional richness on the celebration of the history of costume in the French Mediterranean basin and the history of textiles. Through a chronological journey, this exhibition offers the public a general overview of fashion in Provence since the 18th century. Iconic costumes, or major pieces from the Costa and Pascal collections, are finally displayed in the display cases of this much-anticipated new museum.
At the request of the Fragonard house, Charles Fréger created the sole permanent artwork for the future Museum of Fashion and Costume, depicting Arlesian women in silhouette. Between the real and the imaginary, this internationally renowned photographer dedicates himself to groups of belonging and their external symbols. Insatiable, he travels the globe, producing flamboyant portrait series that capture the individual within their environment and question the construction of archetypal figures. Balancing poetry and pictorial rigour, his work places great emphasis on the collective, whether it be uniforms, work clothes, or colourful masquerade costumes.
